The Mississippi state fair was #1 on a ratings list we found for 2018 fairs, so we were excited to attend. We arrived when the gates opened. The GPS directed us to a back gate, where it appeared the attendants were not briefed on parking or admission. They let us in for free. This fair was in a sprawling site near downtown Jackson. It had one of the largest midways we have seen. We checked out the petting zoo. We sat through some steer judging in a very nice barn with a really ornate roofing system. We also saw a pretty large sheep/goat barn. The Trade Mart was a large building that housed the 4H, FFA and other exhibits, and a massive antique car show. Unfortunately, the small livestock consisted of only a small FFA exhibit containing some baby ducks, chickens and 2 rabbits. The Mississippi Agriculture department had a free biscuit booth where they were handing out fresh biscuits that were quite tasty, especially paired with the 50¢ chocolate milk. Though the midway rides are not one of the things we go to the fairs for, we were impressed with the large amount and variety of rides this fair offered, in two separate sections…one for older kids and adults, and also a kid zone, with smaller rids for the younger ones. Lisa was impressed that they even had a log flume ride! The only ride we did go on was the sky ride (chair lift), which we have ridden on at another fair. There was an exceptional thrill show that included a stunt unicyclist, caged motorcycles (2 cycles and a 4-wheeler in an enclosed 14’ ball), and other pretty amazing acts. We also saw a very entertaining Labrador Retriever show. On the recommendation of folks next to us at the stunt show, we got a deep-fried chicken-on-a-stick that was really good, and included onion petals and dill pickles also fried into the mix. Especially considering the accidental free admission and parking, this fair more than made up for the Georgia fair 2 days ago.
